A Very Spooky Full Moon and Owling Walk at Cooper Creek Reservoir 10/28/23
Twenty two participants and five volunteers arrived at the reservoir for this night hike and owling event at about 5:30pm. Most of us had to drive around the VERY SPOOKY parade going on in Sutherlin on our way to the lake!
It was still very light out when we started walking down the road towards the end of the lake. We heard Belted Kingfishers and Mallard Ducks. We saw White Crowned Sparrows and American Robins. As we walked further, we heard a Northern Pygmy Owl call! From the road we saw and heard a group of Canada Geese on the shore of the lake. Later in the walk a Barred Owl called several times. On our way back to our starting point two Great Horned Owls vocalized to one another on either side of our group! The VERY BRIGHT full moon (with Jupiter just below it) came gliding up behind us just as we walked back to our cars. That was a great way to end this awesome walk! We may do this walk again in December so keep an eye on our emails if you have interest in joining us for this.
A special thanks to our awesome trip leader, Madrone Ruggiero. Madrone helped us to identify the birds we saw and heard tonight as well as educating us about the current issues with some of the owl species we heard during the walk. Madrone is a valuable volunteer team member of our flock, we greatly appreciate Madrone’s time and effort in helping UVAS to take flight!
