Serge was born in Paris and became a naturalist when his eyes were opened to wildlife when he had a video camera in his hands. After college, he became an ethologist and studied a captive group of 11 chimpanzees for 9 years documenting their social behavior in comparison to those in the wild. Next he sought out snakes throughout Europe and North Africa, and in 1976 took his camera to the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. For 5 years he studied international gastronomy, and ended up being the Executive Chef of the World Trade Club of San Francisco and a guest Chef in the White House. In 2005 he retired to Roseburg, where he discovered a fascination for the avian world and has been an avid birder ever since.
