SUMMARY:10/7/2026 - 6 pm - "The Northern Peru Hummingbirds"
DESCRIPTION:“Sparkling Violetear” photo credit: Serge Queant. \n  \nUmpqua Bird Alliance and the Roseburg Public Library presents: \n “The Northern Peru Hummingbirds” \nBy naturalist and video photographer \nSerge Queant \n6 p.m. Wednesday\, October 7 \nIt’s free to the Public \nThis program is only available in person at the \nRoseburg Public Library\, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd. \n  \nSerge will take us on a tour of 8 well-known hummingbird reserves in Northern Peru featuring 35 different species of hummingbirds. You will see the largest and the smallest to the rarest and most beautiful of hummingbirds through his amazing video photography. You will feel like you are there\, up close and personal. \nPart 2 of the program will feature more of an assortment of birds that includes the Inca Tern\, the Humboldt Penguin\, the Andean Condor\, the rare Diademed Sandpiper\, as well as the most colorful of all tanagers\, the Paradise Tanager. \n \nSerge was born in Paris and became a naturalist when his eyes were opened to wildlife when he had a video camera in his hands. After college\, he became an ethologist and studied a captive group of 11 chimpanzees for 9 years documenting their social behavior in comparison to those in the wild. Next he sought out snakes throughout Europe and North Africa\, and in 1976 took his camera to the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. For 5 years he studied international gastronomy\, and ended up being the Executive Chef of the World Trade Club of San Francisco and a guest Chef in the White House. In 2005 he retired to Roseburg\, where he discovered a fascination for the avian world and has been an avid birder ever since. \nFor more information\, contact Roseburg Public Library staff at 541-492-7050. \n \nTo learn more about Umpqua Bird Alliance\, visit their website at www.umpquaaudubon.org. We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society. \nRecognizing the strength that comes from diversity in both natural systems and human communities\, we welcome all people\, regardless of race\, gender identity\, sexual preference\, age\, levels of physical\, cognitive\, and social ability\, or citizenship status. SUMMARY:Umpqua Bird Alliance Migratory Bird Celebration
DESCRIPTION:  \nRoseburg Fall Swift Watch & Umpqua Valley Migratory Bird Celebration 2026 \nTwo Fridays – September 18 & 25\, beginning at 6:30 pm \nAt the Clay Place Chimney in the Fir Grove section of Stewart Park (off Harvard Ave. behind the Umpqua Valley Arts Center) \n  \nHopefully the swifts will be back at the Clay Place chimney in the Fir Grove section of Stewart Park this year! \nDetails: Vaux’s Swifts generally enter the chimney close to sunset. In September\, sunset will be about 7:15 pm on September 18th and closer to 7:00 pm by the 25th. Weather permitting\, the “Swifts Sisters and Friends” will join us with Americana music beginning around 6:30. \nSwift Watch:  Vaux’s Swifts (pronounced “vawks”) nest only in Western North America\, migrating to Central and South America for the winter. At sunset during migration\, Swifts gather in the dozens\, sometimes hundreds or thousands\, to communally roost. In urban settings\, these roost sites are often in old industrial chimneys. While numbers vary from year to year\, the display can be spectacular. \nUmpqua Bird Alliance members will be available on these two Friday evenings to serve as interpretive naturalists\, with information and brochures about Vaux’s Swifts as well as more general information about birding and our natural world. \nThroughout the migration\, Umpqua Bird Alliance members will be participating in a west coast wide data collection effort. Vaux’s Swift’s natural habitat is old growth forest habitat where they rely on large hollow snags for nesting and roosting. We know Swifts have lost much of their natural habitat and the number of chimneys available for roosting and nesting is also on the decline. Currently only 4 of 11 “old major roost” chimney sites remain available to them in our state. \nUmpqua Valley Migratory Bird Celebration: Vaux’s Swifts are just one of many amazing bird species that pass through our area in the spring and fall in migration. Federal and State agencies will be joining us to celebrate fall bird migration in conjunction with Swift Watch in recognition of World Migratory Bird Day which brings attention to one of the most important and spectacular events in the Americas – bird migration. Information about migration and bird-related activities for kids will be offered. Plus\, we may have. as special guests\, two Cedar Waxwings who are rescued ambassador birds representing all migratory species for your viewing pleasure! \nThis event is a partnership between the Umpqua Bird Alliance and the City of Roseburg Parks & Recreation. \nFor more information\, contact Umpqua Bird Alliance at info@umpquaaudubon.org. \n

SUMMARY:7/22/2026 - 6 pm - Birding In Costa Rica
DESCRIPTION:Umpqua Bird Alliance and the Roseburg Public Library presents: \nAn Educational Program on \n“Birding in Costa Rica” \nBy naturalist and photographer \nMatt Felperin/Smithsonian Associates \n6 p.m. Wednesday\, July 22 \nIt’s free to the Public \nThis program is only available in person and presented virtually on Zoom at the Roseburg Pubic Library\, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd. \n \n  \nMatt Felperin will lead a visual exploration of Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands\, foothills and highland cloud forest\, spanning the lush river corridors of Sarapiqui to the mist-laden peaks of the Talamanca Mountains. Traversing forest trails\, river edges and moss-draped ridgelines\, Felperin documents the remarkable avian variety of these globally significant biodiversity hotspots. \nAlong the way\, encounter trogons\, tanagers\, hummingbirds and toucans; observe mixed-species feeding flocks and high-elevation natives; and gain insight into the elusive species that help define on of the richest bird habitats on Earth. Interwoven with field observations and narrative account from the rainforest\, Felperin offers both a vivid visual record and an informed perspective on the ecological complexity of tropical bird communities. \nFor more information\, contact Roseburg Public Library staff at 541-492-7050. \nROSEBURG_LIBRARY_LOGO\nTo learn more about Umpqua Bird Alliance\, visit their website at www.umpquaaudubon.org. \nRecognizing the strength that comes from diversity in both natural systems and human communities\, we welcome all people\, regardless of race\, gender identity\, sexual preference\, age\, levels of physical\, cognitive\, and social ability\, or citizenship status. SUMMARY:5/13/2026 - UVAS Annual Meeting - 5 pm Social; 6 pm Meeting
DESCRIPTION:UVAS Annual Meeting and Celebration \nWednesday\, May 13\, 2026 \nTriple Oak Wine Vault \n137 NW Locust St\, Oakland \nSocializing beginning at 5 pm; Meeting at 6 pm \n  \n  \nPlease join us for what is always a fun get-together to celebrate another great year for Umpqua Valley Audubon Society!   UVAS will be providing finger foods.  Triple Oak Wine Vault will provide wines as well as beer\, soft drinks\, cider\, and sparkling waters that are available for purchase. \nMeeting agenda:  \n\nYear in review\nFinancial report\nName change proposal to Umpqua Bird Alliance\nElection of officers and board of directors\nVision forward\n\nNo RSVP needed!  While only Audubon members may vote on the officers\, board and the name change proposal\, everyone is welcome to share in this celebration. \nVenue:  Our hosts for this event at Triple Oak Wine Vault are owners Betty Tamm and her husband\, Geoff Faraghan. Triple Oak Vineyard was planted in 2000 by Betty and her late husband\, Paul. Paul was a perfectionist and his attention to detail translated into a reputation for producing high-quality grapes. After his passing in 2013\, Betty took over the management of the vineyard and continues to maintain the excellence of the product\, specializing in Pinot Noir and Tempranillo.  Triple Oak also offers white wines such as Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer\, as well as blends. Triple Oak Wine Vault’s Oak Woodland Series of labels feature birds that frequent the vineyard property nestled within an Oak Woodland.  While the labels are delightful\, the wine behind the labels is just as good. \nFacility Accessibility: The Triple Oak Tasting Room is located in an historic building Oakland. The restroom has a flat entrance (no step) and a wide door\, however\, the room is narrow.  There is a bathroom in the back of the building that is wider with turning space that can accommodate a wheelchair.  The front door is a double door with one step.  It has been accessed by wheelchair use with assistance. \n Parking: There is not a designated handicapped parking spot; however there is room for a van to unload in a corner parking spot in front of the building.  If needed\, the adjacent area can be coned off to allow for wheelchair access. \nPhoto from May 2025 of Mark Hamm celebrating Bill Fuller’s retirement as a decades-long UVAS board member and treasurer. SUMMARY:2/11/2026 - 6:30 pm - Education Program entitled "A Bird's Rainbow" by Bob Lewis
DESCRIPTION:The Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and Roseburg Public Library invite the public to “A Bird’s Rainbow” presented in person by scientist\, birder and teacher Bob Lewis at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Feb. 11. \n  \nMany birds are brightly colored\, others use patterned feathers for camouflage. How do these colors originate? What’s the difference between colors from pigments and physical colors? From yellow warblers to Anna’s hummingbirds\, from snow geese to Brewer’s blackbirds\, each species makes unique use of the feather colors it possesses. What do the colors indicate to other birds? And do birds see the same colors we do? Lewis will unravel some of the mysteries of color in birds with a little chemistry\, a bit of physics and a lot of brightly colored slides. \n  \nLewis trained as a chemist and worked in the energy field for 33 years. He has taught birding classes in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 25 years and served as the chair of Golden Gate Bird Alliance’s Adult Education Committee. He was honored with American Birding Association’s Chandler Robbins Award for Education and Conservation in 2016 and Golden Gate Bird Alliance’s Paul Covel Education Award in 2010 and 2017. \n  \nLewis loves to travel and photograph birds and has chased birds in more than 60 countries. His life list is more than 5\,500 species. \nThe program can be seen at the Roseburg Public Library (RPL) 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd. on 2/11/2026 at 6:30pm.  It can also be watched live on the RPL Facebook page. It is free to the public.  For more information\, contact Roseburg Public Library staff at 541-492-7050 or library@roseburgor.gov. \n  \nTo learn more about the Umpqua Valley Audubon Society\, visit their website at www.umpquaaudubon.org

If you are new to doing a CBC\, you will not be sent out on your own. We will connect you with an experienced leader. If you can’t make this event\, you will learn as you go from your team. \nCountdown Potluck Dinner for all Participants \nDecember 20th Starting at 5 pm \nat the Roseburg Public Library in the Ford Room \n If counting birds isn’t your thing\, can you volunteer to help with the Countdown dinner? \nCould you bring in a dish of food to share? Or help take every down and put away? \n                                        5:00 pm: Bring in dish to share. Hot beverages available \n                                        5:30 pm: Dinner (bring personal fork/spoon\, bowl\, plate and cup) \n                                        6:30 pm: Group countdown of species will begin. \n                                        7:00pm: Help clean up \n  \nTo partake in the census or get more information about it: \nContact Mark Hamm at Mark@hammdentistry.com or 541-580-3081. \n To help with the Post-Count Potluck Dinner: \nContact Tracy Maxwell at t.maxwelluvas@gmail.com or 831-809-3488 \nHere’s a link for more information about the CBC from National Audubon:  https://www.audubon.org/answers-your-top-questions-about-christmas-bird-count and \nhttps://www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count \nRecognizing the strength that comes from diversity in both natural systems and human communities\, we welcome all people\, regardless of race\, gender identity\, sexual preference\, age\, physical\, cognitive\, and social ability\, or citizenship status. SUMMARY:12/10/2025- 6 pm - Presentation: “Bird-Brained: Bird Intelligence and Behaviors”
DESCRIPTION:  \nUmpqua Valley Audubon and the Roseburg Public Library present \nAn Educational Presentation: \n“Bird-Brained: Bird Intelligence and Behaviors” \nBy ornithologist Dan Gleason \nWednesday\, December 10\, 2025 at 6 pm \nIt is free to the public. \n  \nTwo ways to join us! \n#1: Dan Gleason will visit virtually on Zoom and attendees are invited to participate in person at the Roseburg Public library in the Ford room. \n#2: Watch it online on FacebookLive@roseburgpubliclibrary. (No Facebook account is required.) \nHave you ever been called bird-brained? It was likely intended as an insult\, but perhaps\, after this lecture\, you might say thank you in reply! The assumption is that birds are of low intelligence because most birds are small and have small brains. But there is a lot packed into those small skulls and brains. \nIn this program\, we will look at a variety of behaviors that demonstrate the intelligence of birds\, and we’ll consider some of the differences between intelligence and instinct. Watch the crows and jays in your yard\, and you may be surprised at some of the clever things they do! \nDan Gleason taught on the faculty at the University of Oregon for more than 30 years and continued teaching Field Ornithology even after retiring. He is the author of two books about birds\, and his “Register Guard” column\, “Backyard Habitats\,” ran monthly for more than 10 years in the mid-2000s. Since 2013\, Gleason and his wife\, Barbara\, have operated the two Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Eugene. \nROSEBURG_LIBRARY_LOGO

SUMMARY:2025 Umpqua Valley Swift Watch – The Swifts are BACK!!!!! And so are WE!!!
DESCRIPTION:2025 Umpqua Valley Swift Watch \nThe Swifts are BACK!!!!!  And so are WE!!! \nFridays\, September 19 and 26; beginning around 6:30 pm \nClay Place Chimney\, Fir Grove Park \n Update: \nNature is so fun!  Just when we’d given up hope that the Vaux’s swifts would utilize the Clay Place chimney in Fir Grove Park during their southward migration this year\, they have suddenly shown up in good numbers! \nDetails:   \nUmpqua Valley Audubon Society members will be available at the Clay Place Chimney Friday evenings to serve as interpretive naturalists\, with information and brochures about Vaux’s Swifts as well as more general information about birding and our natural world. \nThroughout the migration\, Audubon members will be participating in a west coast wide data collection effort. The Vaux’s Swift’s natural habitat is old growth forest habitat where they rely on large hollow snags for nesting and roosting. We know Swifts have lost much of their natural habitat and the number of chimneys available for roosting and nesting is also on the decline. Little is known about even the most basic habits of Vaux’s Swifts\, to say nothing of how many there actually are. Working in conjunction with our partners up and down the west coast\, we hope to fill in some of the data gaps. \nTiming: \nVaux’s Swifts generally enter the chimney close to sunset\, but may go in earlier or later\, depending on weather conditions.  Sunset will be at 7:15 on the 19th and at 7:02 on the 26th. \nMusic: \nMembers of the Winds of Umpqua will be joining us most evenings.  Just like the swifts\, we never know when or how many musicians will show up!  The Winds of Umpqua is a Native American style flute group\, sometimes with hand drum accompaniment\, with an intuitive style of play. \nThis event is a partnership of Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and the City of Roseburg Parks & Recreation. \nFor more information\, contact Umpqua Valley Audubon Society at info@umpquaaudubon.org.

\nFacility Accessibility:   The Triple Oak Tasting Room is located in an historic building.  The restroom has a flat entrance (no step) and a wide door\, however\, the room is narrow.  There is a bathroom in the back of the building that is wider with turning space that can accommodate a wheelchair.  The front door is a double door with one step.  It has been accessed by wheelchair use with assistance. \nParking: There is no designated handicapped parking spot\, however there is room for a van to unload in a corner parking spot in front of the building.  If needed\, the adjacent area can be coned off to allow for wheelchair access.\nNo RSVP needed!  While only Audubon members may vote on the officers and board\, everyone is welcome to share in this celebration.
