SUMMARY:2/11/2026 - 6:30 pm - Education Program entitled "A Bird's Rainbow" by Bob Lewis
DESCRIPTION:The Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and Roseburg Public Library invite the public to “A Bird’s Rainbow” presented in person by scientist\, birder and teacher Bob Lewis at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Feb. 11. \n  \nMany birds are brightly colored\, others use patterned feathers for camouflage. How do these colors originate? What’s the difference between colors from pigments and physical colors? From yellow warblers to Anna’s hummingbirds\, from snow geese to Brewer’s blackbirds\, each species makes unique use of the feather colors it possesses. What do the colors indicate to other birds? And do birds see the same colors we do? Lewis will unravel some of the mysteries of color in birds with a little chemistry\, a bit of physics and a lot of brightly colored slides. \n  \nLewis trained as a chemist and worked in the energy field for 33 years. He has taught birding classes in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 25 years and served as the chair of Golden Gate Bird Alliance’s Adult Education Committee. He was honored with American Birding Association’s Chandler Robbins Award for Education and Conservation in 2016 and Golden Gate Bird Alliance’s Paul Covel Education Award in 2010 and 2017. \n  \nLewis loves to travel and photograph birds and has chased birds in more than 60 countries. His life list is more than 5\,500 species. \nThe program can be seen at the Roseburg Public Library (RPL) 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd. on 2/11/2026 at 6:30pm.  It can also be watched live on the RPL Facebook page. It is free to the public.  For more information\, contact Roseburg Public Library staff at 541-492-7050 or library@roseburgor.gov. \n  \nTo learn more about the Umpqua Valley Audubon Society\, visit their website at www.umpquaaudubon.org

SUMMARY:12/10/2025- 6 pm - Presentation: “Bird-Brained: Bird Intelligence and Behaviors”
DESCRIPTION:  \nUmpqua Valley Audubon and the Roseburg Public Library present \nAn Educational Presentation: \n“Bird-Brained: Bird Intelligence and Behaviors” \nBy ornithologist Dan Gleason \nWednesday\, December 10\, 2025 at 6 pm \nIt is free to the public. \n  \nTwo ways to join us! \n#1: Dan Gleason will visit virtually on Zoom and attendees are invited to participate in person at the Roseburg Public library in the Ford room. \n#2: Watch it online on FacebookLive@roseburgpubliclibrary. (No Facebook account is required.) \nHave you ever been called bird-brained? It was likely intended as an insult\, but perhaps\, after this lecture\, you might say thank you in reply! The assumption is that birds are of low intelligence because most birds are small and have small brains. But there is a lot packed into those small skulls and brains. \nIn this program\, we will look at a variety of behaviors that demonstrate the intelligence of birds\, and we’ll consider some of the differences between intelligence and instinct. Watch the crows and jays in your yard\, and you may be surprised at some of the clever things they do! \nDan Gleason taught on the faculty at the University of Oregon for more than 30 years and continued teaching Field Ornithology even after retiring. He is the author of two books about birds\, and his “Register Guard” column\, “Backyard Habitats\,” ran monthly for more than 10 years in the mid-2000s. Since 2013\, Gleason and his wife\, Barbara\, have operated the two Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Eugene. \nROSEBURG_LIBRARY_LOGO

SUMMARY:2025 Umpqua Valley Swift Watch – The Swifts are BACK!!!!! And so are WE!!!
DESCRIPTION:2025 Umpqua Valley Swift Watch \nThe Swifts are BACK!!!!!  And so are WE!!! \nFridays\, September 19 and 26; beginning around 6:30 pm \nClay Place Chimney\, Fir Grove Park \n Update: \nNature is so fun!  Just when we’d given up hope that the Vaux’s swifts would utilize the Clay Place chimney in Fir Grove Park during their southward migration this year\, they have suddenly shown up in good numbers! \nDetails:   \nUmpqua Valley Audubon Society members will be available at the Clay Place Chimney Friday evenings to serve as interpretive naturalists\, with information and brochures about Vaux’s Swifts as well as more general information about birding and our natural world. \nThroughout the migration\, Audubon members will be participating in a west coast wide data collection effort. The Vaux’s Swift’s natural habitat is old growth forest habitat where they rely on large hollow snags for nesting and roosting. We know Swifts have lost much of their natural habitat and the number of chimneys available for roosting and nesting is also on the decline. Little is known about even the most basic habits of Vaux’s Swifts\, to say nothing of how many there actually are. Working in conjunction with our partners up and down the west coast\, we hope to fill in some of the data gaps. \nTiming: \nVaux’s Swifts generally enter the chimney close to sunset\, but may go in earlier or later\, depending on weather conditions.  Sunset will be at 7:15 on the 19th and at 7:02 on the 26th. \nMusic: \nMembers of the Winds of Umpqua will be joining us most evenings.  Just like the swifts\, we never know when or how many musicians will show up!  The Winds of Umpqua is a Native American style flute group\, sometimes with hand drum accompaniment\, with an intuitive style of play. \nThis event is a partnership of Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and the City of Roseburg Parks & Recreation. \nFor more information\, contact Umpqua Valley Audubon Society at info@umpquaaudubon.org.

Paul was a perfectionist and his attention to detail translated into a reputation for producing high-quality grapes. After his passing in 2013\, Betty took over the management of the vineyard and continues to maintain the excellence of the product\, specializing in Pinot Noir and Tempranillo.  Triple Oak also offers white wines such as Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer\, as well as blends. Triple Oak Wine Vault’s Oak Woodland Series of labels feature birds that frequent the vineyard property nestled within an Oak Woodland.  While the labels are delightful\, the wine behind the labels is just as good. \nFacility Accessibility:   The Triple Oak Tasting Room is located in an historic building.  The restroom has a flat entrance (no step) and a wide door\, however\, the room is narrow.  There is a bathroom in the back of the building that is wider with turning space that can accommodate a wheelchair.  The front door is a double door with one step.  It has been accessed by wheelchair use with assistance. \nParking: There is no designated handicapped parking spot\, however there is room for a van to unload in a corner parking spot in front of the building.  If needed\, the adjacent area can be coned off to allow for wheelchair access.\nNo RSVP needed!  While only Audubon members may vote on the officers and board\, everyone is welcome to share in this celebration.

The field road is a downward slope with some ruts and slippery gravel areas.  Mindfulness is needed for foot placement. We will be walking all the way back down to the cars. \nRestrooms: a bathroom will be available at the house\, but it is not ADA accessible. \nThe Denney family has owned this 100 acre farm in Lookingglass since 1989.  Steve and Kris have raised three boys on the farm\, and all have graduated college and are employed in the medical field.  They have raised hay\, pigs\, some timber and also had a commercial vineyard for 20 years.  In 2004 they converted the vineyard to a Wetland Mitigation Bank to offset loss of wetlands in the Umpqua Basin.  Steve has spent most of his time on the property eliminating and controlling invasive species such as Scotch broom\, English hawthorn\, blackberry and meadow knapweed and has been pretty successful in controlling them.  Steve has been interested in planting and re-establishing white and black oak as well as ponderosa pine on the property.  There are several different and important habitats on the farm including oak savannah grassland\, oak-mixed conifer\, oak wetland and wetland prairie where different species of birds can be observed. \nFor questions prior to the field trip contact Stacy Burleigh at stacymb13@gmail.com.  For questions the morning of 4/26\, call Stacy at 541-378-5578. \nDirections: From Roseburg\, go west on Harvard\, and turn south on Lookingglass Rd–continue for 5.7 miles to 303 Nandy Rd. \nFrom Melrose\, head west on Melrose Rd\, turn south on Colonial Rd\, and turn east on Lookingglass Rd where sign indicates to Roseburg- continue 1.2 miles to 303 Nandy Rd

SUMMARY:Ford's Pond is a GO for tomorrow - 9 am!
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, it is going to be chilly. I will be my normal very bundled self when I’m birding in the winter. Weather shows 36 to 40 degrees between 9 and 11 am. I live just above snow line so had snow on Wednesday. The last 2 nights the forecast was another round of snow\, but nothing. Tonight shows 40% of snow from 2 am to 6 am\, probably just at higher elevations even if it does occur. Put on your layers and your mud boots and join me! The only reason I will not be there is if we get snow that occurs in town in Roseburg and Sutherlin and the roads are problematic. \nStacy

SUMMARY:Roseburg-Sutherlin Christmas Bird Count (CBC) - Full Info 12/21/2024
DESCRIPTION:UVAS Annual Roseburg-Sutherlin Christmas Bird Count (CBC) \nSaturday\, December 21\, 2024 \nHave you heard of the Christmas Bird Count? \nWould you like to start a new tradition for the holiday season?  Would you like to be of service participating in a national bird census\, while having fun and learning more about birds? The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual one-day event held between December 14th and January 5th each year by local communities throughout the United States.  Each community chooses the best date for them. Our tradition for the date has been the 3rd Saturday in December which this year occurs on Saturday\, December 21\, 2024.   \nHow it works \nEach count takes place in an established 15-mile diameter circle. The circle is divided up into sections led by experienced birders.  We would like new participants to attend the training class. Each section is different in how the count is conducted. Some sections include a lot of driving; other sections you drive to different spots and get out.  Sections can also include a half-day or a full day of walking. Typically the count starts at dawn and ends at sunset\, though some individuals also go out owling within the 24 hour period. \nTraining and Bird ID\nSaturday\, December 7\, 2024 \n5:30 pm: New to the CBC?  Basic ‘How To’ training.\n6:30 pm: Refresher on tricky bird identification. \nLocated at: “The Roost” 631 W. Ballf St.\, Roseburg (Across from Hamm Dentistry) \nBird at Home \nAnother option to help with the count is to record the birds at your home (feeder and/or property)\, if it is included in the circle.  If new to doing this\, you must register and take the training class. You will be using the same paperwork as everyone else. \nIf you are interested in participating in your first CBC\, want to count birds at home\, or you are an experienced CBC participant but new to partaking in our Roseburg-Sutherlin Bird Count\, please contact: \nMark Hamm at mark@hammdentistry.com or text him at 541-580-3081 \n(To our dedicated participants who volunteer year after year to help with this CBC event\, thank you so much!  Mark Hamm will contact you shortly!) \n2024 CBC Bird Tally Sheet \nClick here to find the 2024 UVAS Roseburg-Sutherlin CBC Bird Tally Sheet. \n2024 PowerPoint Birding “Quiz” \nWant to test your knowledge of birds you may see on the Christmas Bird Count this year? Download a “Quiz” here. This quiz requires Microsoft PowerPoint or equivalent to utilize.  You’ll be shown a series of birds throughout Douglas County you may encounter with links to learn more about the specific bird and even hear what unique songs/calls it makes.
