SUMMARY:9/12/2026 - 8 am - Ford's Pond Bird Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Umpqua Bird Alliance \nA Chapter of the National Audubon Society \nFord’s Pond Bird Field Trip \nSaturday\, September 12\, 2026 \n START TIME 8:00 am \nNo Registration needed \n  \n Enjoy The Morning With Us! \nMeet:  8:00 am at Ford’s Pond parking lot -382 Church Rd\, Sutherlin. From I-5 take Exit 136\, drive west on Hwy 138 and at 1 mile\, turn left onto Church Rd (**GPS may not be dependable). The walk will be approximately 2 hours long. Participants can leave when they need to. \nAdditional Info:  People new to birding are always welcome to join in\, as are families with children.  Loaner binoculars are available for adults and children. We will have local volunteer birders in attendance\, but we also encourage the group to help spot and ID birds. We walk at a slow pace\, stopping often to observe birds. \nAccessibility and trail conditions: We walk on the ADA accessible pathway on the south side of Ford’s Pond where it is more “birdy”. This also gives us access to Woodruff pond that often has unique species. We do at times step off the ADA pathway. The ADA restrooms are open at the Church Rd parking lot. \nFor questions/info: contact Stacy Burleigh at stacymb13@gmail.com \nNext Dates:  October 10\, 2026 and November 14\, 2026 (None in December/January). \nFemale Gadwall and babies by Marge Cooney \nRecognizing the strength that comes from diversity in both natural systems and human communities\, we welcome all people\, regardless of race\, gender identity\, sexual preference\, age\, levels of physical\, cognitive\, and social ability\, or citizenship status. We continually seek to advance and prioritize diversity\, equity\, and inclusion through our programs and partnerships.

SUMMARY:Umpqua Bird Alliance Migratory Bird Celebration
DESCRIPTION:  \nRoseburg Fall Swift Watch & Umpqua Valley Migratory Bird Celebration 2026 \nTwo Fridays – September 18 & 25\, beginning at 6:30 pm \nAt the Clay Place Chimney in the Fir Grove section of Stewart Park (off Harvard Ave. behind the Umpqua Valley Arts Center) \n  \nHopefully the swifts will be back at the Clay Place chimney in the Fir Grove section of Stewart Park this year! \nDetails: Vaux’s Swifts generally enter the chimney close to sunset. In September\, sunset will be about 7:15 pm on September 18th and closer to 7:00 pm by the 25th. Weather permitting\, the “Swifts Sisters and Friends” will join us with Americana music beginning around 6:30. \nSwift Watch:  Vaux’s Swifts (pronounced “vawks”) nest only in Western North America\, migrating to Central and South America for the winter. At sunset during migration\, Swifts gather in the dozens\, sometimes hundreds or thousands\, to communally roost. In urban settings\, these roost sites are often in old industrial chimneys. While numbers vary from year to year\, the display can be spectacular. \nUmpqua Bird Alliance members will be available on these two Friday evenings to serve as interpretive naturalists\, with information and brochures about Vaux’s Swifts as well as more general information about birding and our natural world. \nThroughout the migration\, Umpqua Bird Alliance members will be participating in a west coast wide data collection effort. Vaux’s Swift’s natural habitat is old growth forest habitat where they rely on large hollow snags for nesting and roosting. We know Swifts have lost much of their natural habitat and the number of chimneys available for roosting and nesting is also on the decline. Currently only 4 of 11 “old major roost” chimney sites remain available to them in our state. \nUmpqua Valley Migratory Bird Celebration: Vaux’s Swifts are just one of many amazing bird species that pass through our area in the spring and fall in migration. Federal and State agencies will be joining us to celebrate fall bird migration in conjunction with Swift Watch in recognition of World Migratory Bird Day which brings attention to one of the most important and spectacular events in the Americas – bird migration. Information about migration and bird-related activities for kids will be offered. Plus\, we may have. as special guests\, two Cedar Waxwings who are rescued ambassador birds representing all migratory species for your viewing pleasure! \nThis event is a partnership between the Umpqua Bird Alliance and the City of Roseburg Parks & Recreation. \nFor more information\, contact Umpqua Bird Alliance at info@umpquaaudubon.org. \n
