Mildred Kanipe Memorial County Park
Bird Field Trip
Saturday, June, 6th 2026
START TIME 8:30 am
No Registration needed
This is an excellent time of year to visit this lovely county park.
This field trip is led by bird biologist, Liz Gayner. Everyone is welcome. This is a family friendly event. We will have binoculars to loan out on site.
Meet: 8:30 am, at the Day Use area (second entrance from the south) at Mildred Kanipe Memorial County Park, 16513 Elkhead Road, Oakland.
Details: We will take a casual stroll on some of the easier trails, looking for mixed woodland and grassland bird species including, Western Bluebird, Lazuli Bunting, White-breasted Nuthatch, various woodpeckers, Bullock’s Orioles, Western Tanager, Western Meadowlark, sparrows and hopefully many others. Oh, and also the beautiful, noisy peafowl!
About the park: “Mildred Kanipe, a farmer, passed away in 1983, leaving her ranch to the public to be a county park. Mildred’s ranch had 1,100 acres of land. On this, there are pastures, creeks, rolling hills, orchards, and forests” There are some beautiful picnic areas so you might want to bring a picnic lunch for when we are done.
Accessibility:
Mildred Knipe Park is user friendly for most people at the two park entrances. There is ADA parking available at both entrances. After leaving the entrances, the paths are uneven with rough ground. There is a combination of sun and shade.
Facilities: ADA wheelchair accessible restrooms are available at the equestrian entrance. The day use farmstead entrance has only a portable toilet available at this time.
Cell phone service is available on an intermittent basis.
