“Land-Sea Conservation Issues and Strategies”

February 7, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The Umpqua Valley Audubon Society (UVAS) and Roseburg Public Library invite the community to a Facebook Live streaming event with conservationist Paul Engelmeyer at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Engelmeyer will present “Land-Sea Conservation Issues and Strategies,” covering topics such as marine reserves, salmon conservation efforts and the Endangered Species Act-listed marbled murrelet.

Engelmeyer’s love of fishing and forests brought him to the Pacific Northwest in 1975. Since then, he has been a tree planter and climber for cones; worked on Oregon State University’s marbled murrelet research team; served on the Salmon Advisory Subpanel and Habitat Committee for the Pacific Fishery Management Council; helped launch the MidCoast Watersheds Council; and helped form the Cape Perpetua Collaborative on the central Oregon coast, among many other efforts.

He has managed Portland Audubon’s Ten Mile Sanctuaries since 1990. Multiple parcels for a total of 336-acres have been secured in conservation status.  The basin is nestled between Cummins and Rock Creek Wildernesses south of Yachats.  In 2012, the Cummins / Ten Mille landscape unit was designated a Globally Significant Bird Area for the ESA listed Murrelet by Birdlife International.

Also, the Cape Perpetua nearshore area from north of Yachat to south of Heceta Head north of Florence has been designated the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve and a Seabird Protected Area.  This area is part of Oregon’s system of 5 Marine Reserves and Marine Protected Areas – including nearshore areas near Cape Flacon MR, Cascade Head MR & MPA, Otter Rock, Cape Perpetua MR/SPA and Redfish Rocks MR near Port Orford.

A moderated Q&A session will follow the presentation. Questions may be submitted before the event to Library staff at library@cityofroseburg.org or 541-492-7051. Alternately, viewers who have a Facebook account may post questions during the event by commenting on the live stream.
