Umpqua Valley Audubon Winter Raptor Run 2026 – Event Report, by Liz Gayner

January 24, 2026

The 2026 annual Umpqua Valley Audubon Winter Raptor Run brought together ten enthusiastic participants for a rewarding day in search of wintering raptors. Under the leadership of Liz Gayner, the group traveled east from Roseburg to North Bank Road and concluded the route at Ford’s Pond, enjoying a full morning of crisp winter birding.

One of the standout moments of the survey was the impressive number of BALD EAGLES, including both adults and subadults, observed along Whistler’s Bend Road and North Bank Road. These areas were especially active, offering excellent views and extended opportunities to observe birds. RED TAILED HAWKS and AMERICAN KESTRELS were also encountered throughout the route, adding to the diversity of raptors recorded during the outing.

Although not a raptor, a particularly interesting seasonal observation for late January was the presence of four TURKEY VULTURES roosting alongside several BALD EAGLES on North Bank Road. Their early appearance hints at the beginning of northbound migration activity in the valley. The final raptor of the day was a COOPER’S HAWK, which made a brief appearance as it slipped past most observers, flying by the parking lot and settling into the trees near Ford’s Pond.

The Winter Raptor Run once again showcased the value of community-based birding and the enthusiasm of local participants. It was a successful and enjoyable event, offering both excellent observations and a chance to appreciate the winter birdlife of the Umpqua Valley.
